Cristian Jura elected in governing body of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance
Bucharest, Nov 20 /Agerpres/ – Romanian Cristian Jura has been elected in the governing body of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI), based in Strasbourg, with 55% of the members voting for him.
“This is the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI), which has three main lines of activity. It issues some general policy recommendations on various issues, migration, the Roma, hate speech, in this area of hate speech, it monitors all Council of Europe member states, which means 46 states, and it draws up country reports, including for Romania, and it also has a component of cooperation with civil society. These are its three components. The most recent scandal was the country report on Italy. There were elections yesterday and colleagues from the 46 Council of Europe member states voted. I ran against the Serbian representative and was elected with 55% of the votes,” Jura told AGERPRES.
The leadership of the European Commission, of which Jura is a member, decides during the meetings that take place in Strasbourg which countries will be subject to monitoring and its direction.
“It is very important for us as a country that a Romanian is a member of one of the institutions of the Council of Europe. And it is very important to have this representation at international level. Basically, I was elected in the governing body which is called ‘bureau’ in French, and the bureau meets at least four times a year. And it decides all these monitoring activities I was telling you about. It decides in which states the monitoring will be carried out and sets the main objectives for the next monitoring cycles. That is, what you are targeting, hate speech, artificial intelligence, the discrimination that artificial intelligence could create, discrimination and racism in sport and so on,” added Cristian Jura.
At the age of 52, Cristian Jura, a lawyer by profession, is a member of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) of the Council of Europe. He is also an arbitrator at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne and a member of the Board of Directors of the National Council for Combating Discrimination (CNCD). He is also one of the founders and president of the Romanian Court of Sports Arbitration.
