PM Mitsotakis: The agreements with Chevron highlight our geopolitical position in the wider region
In his weekly review on Facebook on Sunday, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis placed particular emphasis on the recent agreement between the Greek state and the Chevron-Helleniq Energy consortium, as well as on his trip to India, where he presented to heads of state, leaders of international organisations, and top technology executives the digital leap Greece has made in recent years, along with his meetings with India’s leadership.
“I will begin with the signing of the agreements between the Greek state and the Chevron-Helleniq Energy consortium for the granting of exclusive rights to explore and exploit hydrocarbons in maritime areas south of the Peloponnese and Crete. This development, combined with the planned first exploratory drilling in the offshore ‘Block 2’ in the Ionian Sea, expected in early 2027, constitutes two major milestones on the natural gas exploration front after 40 years. It is a substantive restart,” Mitsotakis noted, adding: “ Following ratification of the agreements by Parliament, research programs will begin and, by the end of the year, the first seismic surveys in the new areas are expected. With the four new concession contracts, the Greek state secures approximately 40% of the profits in the event of discovery and production of potential deposits, without requiring the expenditure of public funds for these high-risk investments.”
Mitsotakis noted that with these agreements Greece strengthens its energy autonomy and security, creates fertile ground for new investments and new competitive jobs, and also ensures significantly increased public revenues.
“ Our energy policy invests in diversifying energy sources and utilizing our national advantages, so that we are not dependent on imports of expensive energy. Over the past 6.5 years we have literally made a leap in renewables-with 50% of produced energy coming from renewable sources-we are already an energy-exporting country, and at the same time we are finally actively utilizing potential natural gas deposits within the framework of strategically important alliances that highlight our geopolitical position in the wider region, while at the same time guaranteeing our security against those who challenge our sovereign rights,” the Prime Minister stressed.
Visit to India
Another sector shaping the future is Artificial Intelligence, Mitsotakis said, noting that at the recent India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, he had the opportunity to present to heads of state, leaders of international organisations, and top technology leaders the digital leap Greece has made in recent years, as well as the government’s position that technology requires rules, transparency, and a social orientation.
He also mentioned that in New Delhi he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi-for the third time in two and a half years-confirming the strategic relationship between the two countries. He noted that this relationship is gaining even greater momentum through the forthcoming EU-India trade agreement, which creates new access opportunities for European products and businesses in a vast market.
“ In 2026 we are opening two new consulates in Mumbai and Bangalore, while the direct Athens-New Delhi connection has already begun. Greece can serve as the Indo-Pacific gateway to Europe and a critical hub of the Middle East-India-Europe Corridor (IMEC), a position also shared by Prime Minister Modi,” Mitsotakis said.
