Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Friday that the government has had no news about possible United States troop withdrawals from Italy, while reiterating that he thinks such a move would be a mistake.

President Donald Trump has threatened to pull troops stationed in the territories of the US’s NATO allies in Europe, including Italy, Germany and Spain, following their failure to help with the Iran war.

Earlier this month Trump said was pulling 5,000 troops from Germany but, in a surprise move, he announced this week that he was sending the same number of troops to Poland.

“We haven’t heard anything yet,” Tajani said when asked about possible US troop withdrawals from Italy as he arrived at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Helsingborg, Sweden.

“In my opinion, it would be a mistake to reduce the U.S. presence in Europe, which must not mean disengagement from Europe.

“I believe that yesterday the United States decided to send more troops to Poland, for example, so we’ll see what decisions are made.

“For now, there has been no decision, no statement from the United States regarding Italy”.
