With the signature of a recent Joint Ministerial Decision, the Hellenic Police and the citizen protection ministry have launched the operation of a new application that digitalises the process of collecting documents needed for the issue of Greek passports. The aim is to modernise the process, thus improving services for citizens and reducing bureaucracy, while enhancing its security.

The new application for the electronic transmission of the required supporting documents enables their transfer from the services receiving the applications to the Directorate of Passports and Security Documents at the Hellenic Police Headquarters.

According to an announcement, the new application was developed at zero cost for the state budget and fully accords with legislation for the protection of personal data.

Its introduction is expected to reduce the time needed to process passport applications, saving up to two days needed to send documents in the post, reducing the time taken for operators to receive applications and also the number of applications rejected due to mistakes in filling out forms. It also abolishes the necessity for a number of supporting documents (digital copy of an ID, proof of payment, certification of investigation for lost or stolen passports), reduces courier costs and enhances security, through the submission of high-quality digital photographs.

The new application will initially be used by all passport offices and other points where supporting documents are collected in Greece and will be extended to Greek consular authorities abroad within 2026, speeding up the issue of passports for Greeks resident abroad by up to 30 days.

It has been in operation since December 31, 2025 but, following a ministry act, the new process will operate alongside the previous process until January 31, 2026 for people who have already collected the required documents and photographs in printed form. From August 3, 2026 onward, possession of the new ID will be mandatory for the issue of a Greek passport.
