Milatovic: Promptly address negative trends that could undermine Montenegro’s European course
Montenegro doesn’t want to undo all previous achievements on the EU integration path, and therefore it is important to promptly address negative domestic trends that could undermine its European course, said Montenegrin President Jakov Mialtovic.
He met on Saturday with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, who paid an official visit to Montenegro.
Milatovic remarked that Montenegro is a positive story both for the EU and the region, adding that it is in their mutual interest to intensify the pace of closing chapters after obtaining a positive IBAR report, so that the country would become the 28th EU member state by 2028.
“We expect closing four negotiation chapters by the end of the year, but Montenegro can and must do better if we want to fulfill our goal and close the remaining 26 chapters by 2026”, said Milatovic
He noted that “we should not be satisfied with results that fall below expectations, in particular those of the citizens”.
“I am sure that Montenegro’s EU membership would be an important positive signal for other candidate countries too”, said Milatovic.
