MEP Siegfried Muresan is re-elected Vice President of the EPP Group in the European Parliament

Strasbourg –  Romanian MEP Siegfried Muresan (PNL – National Liberal Party) was re-elected vice-chairman of the European People’s Party (EPP) Group on Tuesday evening, securing the second-highest number of votes among the ten vice-chairmen elected, with 152 votes.

The EPP Group is the largest and most influential political group in the European Parliament.

“I would like to thank my colleagues who voted for me today [Tuesday – editor’s note] and placed their trust in me for the fourth consecutive time. I greatly appreciate the support of my fellow MEPs from the PNL, who backed my candidacy, and I would also like to thank the MEPs from the UDMR (Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania), a member party of the EPP, for their support and for the excellent cooperation we enjoy within the EPP,” Muresan posted on social media.

He added that the result was important not only for him, but also for Romania.

“Our country will continue to have a strong voice at the table where Europe’s largest political group sets its priorities and positions. I have been a vice-chairman of the EPP Group for seven years and, throughout this period, I have used this position to defend Romania’s interests,” Muresan said.

He maintained that, together with the other PNL MEPs, he had secured the EPP Group’s support for allocating more money to Romania in the form of pre-financing under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), and had ensured that funding from the programme was used to finance Romania’s priorities, such as transport infrastructure.

“These results show one simple thing: Romania benefits when it is represented at the highest level in Europe. In the new term, I will continue to put Romania’s priorities on the agenda of the largest political group in the European Parliament, while also taking account of the priorities of colleagues from other member states. That is how majorities are built at European level,” Muresan said.

“Romania’s voice must be strong in Europe. I will continue to work towards this,” Muresan added in his post.
