Aspokeswoman for European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Thursday that a meeting with US President Donald Trump while he is in Rome for Pope Francis’s funeral was a possibility.

“We are considering the possibility of meeting although at the moment there is nothing confirmed,” said the spokeswoman, Paula Pinho.

She added that “the main objective of von der Leyen’s trip to Rome is really the funeral of Pope Francis,” and not to discuss trade and tariffs.

“If other opportunities arise, on the sidelines of the funeral, then they will, of course, be helpful,” Pinho added.

Trump told reporters at the White House on Wednesday that he would have “many meetings” while in Rome.
