Marinakis: Kastellorizo ‘an emblematic place’ – Government sends message of peace, rejects revisionist claims

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis attended celebrations marking the 83rd anniversary of the liberation of Kastellorizo, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis announced on Monday during a press briefing, citing the comprehensive support programme announced from the remote island.

Marinakis also stressed that Kastellorizo is “an emblematic place” where the government expressed its commitment to a future of peace, with “the doors closed to all revisionist ambitions”, while keeping the way open to mutual respect and international law.

He said that major infrastructure projects on the island would be completed, including the restoration of the main port, the construction of new desalination units, a new sewerage network, a wastewater treatment plant and a water supply network. He also noted that HELLENiQ ENERGY would undertake, as a donation to the island, the full reconstruction of old homes so that doctors, teachers, coastguard officers and public servants could be housed free of charge in Kastellorizo.

Referring to the out-of-court debt settlement mechanism, he said that nearly 70,000 arrangements had been completed, involving initial debts totalling € 20.56 billion. He added that, from Monday, September 21, an additional tool for protecting primary residences through the out-of-court mechanism would be activated for the first time.

On education, the government spokesperson said that 670 schools across the country have been renovated within two years through the “Marietta Giannakou” school renovation programme.
