Maqedonci: The USA agreement aims to advance cooperation in the field of defense

The outgoing government of Kosovo approved on Wednesday the initiative for the signing of a framework agreement for cooperation in the field of defense with the United States of America. The Acting Minister of Defense, Ejup Maqedonci, stated that the purpose of this agreement is for both parties to engage in advancing cooperation in the field of defense.

“The Ministry of Defense, based on strategic objectives and planning in cooperation with allied countries, in full coordination with the United States of America, has initiated the signing of a framework agreement for cooperation in the field of defense between the Republic of Kosovo, represented by the Ministry of Defense, and the United States of America, represented by the Department of Defense. The goal of this agreement is for both parties to engage in advancing cooperation in the defense sector, such as defense planning, strategic resilience, and the development of military strategic capabilities. Such a step in cooperation is undertaken in accordance with the broader goals of Euro-Atlantic integration, security threats, increasing interoperability, always supported by the strong existing partnership in defense and security,” he declared.

The government also gave the green light to the general security agreement with Slovenia for the exchange and mutual protection of classified information.

Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated that this agreement is an important step.

“Reaching the agreement on security in the protection of classified information between Kosovo and Slovenia is an important step with an impact on several aspects. Strengthening bilateral cooperation, securing classified information, improving institutional capacities, and supporting Euro-Atlantic integration,” Kurti said.

In today’s government meeting, three agreements between Kosovo and the United Kingdom were approved. The Acting Minister of Justice, Albulena Haxhiu, stated that the first agreement is for the transfer of convicted persons.

“The goal of this agreement is to further improve mutual cooperation in the field of justice, establish justice, and the social rehabilitation of convicted persons, allowing the execution of penal sanctions in the country of the convicted person’s permanent residence. This agreement regulates the execution of court decisions through the transfer of the convicted person when a citizen of the administering state is serving a sentence in the sentencing state and requests a transfer to the administering state for the purpose of social rehabilitation,” she said.

The second agreement approved is the initiative for the agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters between Kosovo and the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, the third agreement is for extradition, which Haxhiu said is based on Kosovo’s commitment to develop European partnership. In today’s cabinet meeting, among other things, the initiative for the signing of the international partnership agreement for the management of the grant contract for technical assistance within the cross-border cooperation program Kosovo-Albania was also approved. The initiative for the signing of the international partnership agreement for managing the grant contract for technical assistance was also approved with Montenegro.
