Last group of 15 flotilla Italians coming home

The last group of 15 Italians who were among the activists in the Global Sumud Flotilla detained by Israel last week when it intercepted the boats seeking to take aid to Gaza are set to return home on Monday.

“They will leave on a charter flight to Athens,” Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said.

“They will be assisted by our embassy both at departure and then in Greece in the transfer to Italy”.

Four Italian lawmakers who took part in the flotilla were released on Friday and 26 others returned on Saturday.

The 15 had to wait for an order expelling them from Israel as they had refused to sign a form for their voluntary release.

They are among around 170 activists set to be expelled on Monday.

Several of the activists who have returned to Italy have complained that they were subjected to degrading treatment and held in inhumane conditions, with inadequate food and water, some being forced to sleep on the floor, and others allegedly denied vital medication.
