Podgorica, (MINA) – Hate speech following the Cetinje tragedy must not be ignored, the Center for Democratic Transition (CDT) has stated and called on the political leaders, media and civil society to recognize their role in lowering tensions and promoting dialogue.
This NGO strongly condemned the wave of hate speech that came in the aftermath of the Cetinje tragedy.
CDT Program Director Milica Kovačević said that dehumanization, manipulations and false narratives, which flooded the tabloids, right-wing media and social networks, represented a serious attack on fundamental values.
According to her, the reactions of politicians were selective, partisan and devoid of a genuine call to calm tensions.
Kovačević further assessed that the Police Administration and the Prosecutor’s Office additionally contributed to this problem through inactivity, delayed announcements, and insufficient information about the measures taken.
“We urge all competent institutions – the police, the prosecution and the judiciary – to finally take responsibility and demonstrate that the law applies equally to all. Inciting religious and national hatred must no longer remain unpunished”, the press release reads.
