Pernik, Western Bulgaria, (BTA) – As part of the International Festival of Masquerade Games Surva, the central square in Pernik saw performances by participants from Bulgaria, Italy, Greece, Romania, Ireland, and the Republic of North Macedonia on Saturday. This year, the forum celebrates its 60th anniversary since its establishment in 1966.
The first performers were locals from the borough of Bela Voda dressed as bears who demonstrated a traditional wedding ritual of the region. They were wearing zoomorphic masks with gaping mouths and long teeth.
The festival programme will continue on Sunday with masquerade parades and the official closing ceremony of the anniversary edition.
BTA is a media partner of the event.
