Podgorica, (MINA) – Slovakia supports Montenegro in its ambition to become the next EU member state, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said, adding that the country has a historic opportunity to successfully complete the accession process.

He made this remark during his meeting with Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic.

According to the press release from Milatovic’s office, Fico confirmed Slovakia’s full support for Montenegro’s ambition to become the next EU member state by 2028, assessing that the country has a historic opportunity to successfully complete the accession process.

He also welcomed Montenegro’s plan to open the Embassy in Bratislava, as an additional incentive for stronger and more direct cooperation between the two countries.

Milatovic said that Montenegro wants to turn the strong political support of its European partners into the completion of its European integration.

“Montenegro is the next member of the EU. Our goal is to become the 28th member by 2028. Today we are closer to that than ever before and now it is important to maintain the pace of reforms and complete the negotiation process”, said Milatovic.

He thanked Fico for his consistent support for Montenegro’s European path.

“The interlocutors positively assessed the direct air connection between Podgorica and Bratislava and its importance for the development of tourism, business and other contacts”, the press release says.
