The European Commission likes the idea of a EU-US summit for talks on trade organized thanks to Premier Giorgia Meloni’s friendly relations with United States President Donald Trump, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday on the basis of the analysis of some European officials.
Hopes of agreement to stop Trump’s 20% tariffs on EU goods, which have been suspended for 90 days, have been boosted by Meloni’s positive visit to the White House last week for talks with Trump.
Both leaders expressed optimism a deal can be reached over Washington’s tariffs at the meeting and Meloni said Trump had accepted an invitation to come to Rome.
The FT said European Council President Antonio Costa, who has the job of such meetings, had talks with Meloni about a possible EU-US summit.
