A total of 41 people were arrested on Wednesday in a huge operation by the Carabinieri police’s ROS unit targetting the Calabrian Ndrangheta mafia in the Cosenza area.

The police took 24 of the suspects to jail while 17 were placed under house arrest, including Flavio Stasi, the centre-left mayor of the town of Corigliano-Rossano.

Damiano Pepe, an alleged mafia boss who was wounded in a hit on Friday, was among the people arrested.

The suspects faces charges including membership in a mafia-type organization, murder, illegal possession of weapons, extortion, robbery, theft, aiding and abetting illegal immigration, and engaging in mafia-linked electoral pacts.
