Djukanovic: Energy transition is a historic opportunity for Montenegro

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – According to Chairman of the Board of Directors of Elektroprivreda (EPCG) Milutin Djukanovic, fast-tracking the development of renewable energy sources is the only clear vision and historic opportunity that Montenegro must not miss.

Opening of the Conference of the Montenegrin Committee of the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CG KO CIGRE), held at the Mediteran Hotel in Becici, he stated that EPCG has a clear vision of development, based on the principle of generating energy at the place of consumption, maximum use of hydroelectric infrastructure for the integration of solar panels, as well as the introduction of battery systems to strengthen the stability of the power system.

“Based on the investment policy we are pursuing, we plan to build at least 650 megawatts of new capacity by 2027, through the completion of the Gvozd wind farm, solar projects, and other investments,” said Djukanovic.

He said, however, that even that will not be enough, because the price of coal-based energy is rising, and adding that a new challenge will be the introduction of the CBAM.

Djukanovic emphasized that the success of the energy transition critically depends on the Montenegrin Electricity Distribution System (CEDIS) and the Montenegrin Electricity Transmission System (CGES) being ahead of EPCG in implementing infrastructure projects, in order to ensure timely connection of new capacities to the grid.
