Bucharest commmie-era automobiles to go on display on Sunday on National Library esplanade
The exhibition dubbed “The City’s Socialist Cars” featuring a selection of automobiles that rode the Bucharest streets during the socialist period will open on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. on the esplanade of the National Library of Romania, the Retromobil Club Romania said in a release.
“A collective work of socialism on wheels, of all the user classes united in one voice and one feeling, the car show will unfold in three acts – The Privileged, the State, and The Citizens of the Republic, bringing together a selection of vintage marvels – passenger cars, special vehicles for the use of civilians or authorities, trucks, mopeds and motorcycles that circulated in Bucharest in those years,” the release states.
This year’s edition of “The City’s Socialist Cars”, part of the “Bucharest Cars” series, showcases a unique selection of vehicles representative for the period 1947 – 1989, following the automotive phenomenon of the socialist era, inaugurated by the arrival of Soviet tanks in 1944, in its chronological succession in three distinct periods, each with its specific traits: Stalinism (1947 – 1965), De-Stalinization – democratization of the automobile (1965 – 1980), Ceausescu’s National Communism (1980 – 1989).
The exhibits come exclusively from the collections of Retromobil Club Romania members.
