Naples finance and Carabinieri police staged an operation on Wednesday to arrest four people in relation to an investigation into the hold the Contini clan of the Camorra mafia allegedly had over several of the activities of the city’s San Giovanni Bosco hospital, sources said.

The clan allegedly managed to control activities such as the hospital’s bar services and vending machines via threats and the complicity of some administrators.

They also used the hospital for scams involving fake road accidents to defraud insurance companies and for certificates of bogus health problems to get mobsters released from jail on medical grounds, among other things.

In total 76 people are under investigation in relation to the case, including six former or current public officials.

A former policeman, a civil servant for pensions-and-social-security agency INPS and three doctors are among them.
