The contribution of the Athens International Airport (AIA) to the Greek economy amounts to 3.3 billion euros, according to research conducted by the Foundation for Economic & Industrial Research (IOBE) to assess the economic and social impact of the Athens Airport, which was presented at a special event held on Wednesday for the 35th annual ACI Europe conference, which is taking place in Athens from June 18 to June 20.

As stated by AIA CEO Yiannis Paraschis, the airport’s recovery has a significant impact on the country’s economy despite the challenges it has faced from time to time. “The study was based on the results of 2023, with a 10% increase in passenger traffic compared to 2019 and a further 13.5% increase in 2024 compared to 2023, so the positive impacts are even higher,” the CEO of Athens International Airport commented.

The upward trend is continuing since, according to estimates, passenger traffic in the first half of 2025 will be +8% above the corresponding period in 2024.

“Now, we are entering a phase where we will have further positive and multiplying effects on the Greek economy due to the new investment programme of 1.3 billion euros, creating the infrastructure to welcome over 40 million visitors per year,” he added.

The Athens International Airport “is not just a transport infrastructure, but has evolved into a living cell of the local society and the national economy,” he said, expressing his satisfaction that the airport has recovered at such a rapid pace despite the successive crises, both economic and the pandemic, which had a significant impact on the economy and its interconnectivity.
