Deputy Premier, Foreign Minister and Forza Italia (FI) leader Antonio Tajani said Monday that he does not share fellow Deputy Premier Matteo Salvini’s enthusiasm for the far-right AfD party after the Transport Minister and League chief welcomed its strong showing in Sunday’s election in Germany.
“I support the EPP (European People’s Party) and the CDU-CSU (in Germany).
I have always said so,” Tajani said.
“As far as I’m concerned, the AfD is not an interlocutor of ours.
I say this as FI secretary and EPP vice-president, because it has a completely different vision from ours.
“It is not a political party that has positive ideas about Italy, they say that Italy must leave the euro and it acts a bit like a school teacher when it comes to public debt too and I do not agree with it.
“I respect all those who vote for different parties in different countries, but, as far as I’m concerned, the AfD’s positions are irreconcilable with mine”.
