Police sources said Monday that 14 law-enforcement officers were injured in clashes with rioting youths in Milan on Sunday.
They said 271 people were taken to the police headquarters in the city after being stopped during the rioting, including 220 minors and 60 foreign nationals.
The sources said that, of those 271 people, 32 were arrested, including 13 foreign nationals and 23 minors, and 28 were reported to prosecutors.
The Milan Public Prosecutor’s Office, meanwhile, on Monday requested that the arrests of five men between the ages of 18 and 20 who were held during rioting on Saturday be confirmed and that they be put in pretrial detention in prison.
They are charged with aggravated resistance, vandalism, and looting.
A group calling itself the October 17 Movement said in an Instgram post on Monday that the “mobilization” would continue every Saturday “until the fall of this thieving government”.
“We are the people of the streets—the ones who see the only true violence in the police’s batons,” said the post on a newly created page, inviting users to join a Telegram group.
“You are the violent ones; you’ve denied us a future, and now we’re taking that future for ourselves,” said one post, with the page’s administrators adding: “We reject all accusations.
It is this system—which is killing us—that is truly violent.” Among the few posts on the new page was a video showing some people who looted shops in Milan’s city centre giving their spoils to a homeless person, accompanied by the caption: “Proletarian expropriation in Milan”.
