Podgorica, (MINA) – Women’s representation in politics remains far from sufficient, and it must evolve into real influence, responsibility and change, it was assessed in Podgorica at the opening of the Women Political Leaders Summit (WPL Summit).
Deputy Parliament Speaker Zdenka Popovic said that this is a special day not only for Montenegro, but also for the region, demonstrating that equality is no longer merely a topic of discussion, but is becoming a political priority.
“I can proudly say – Montenegro is no longer a follower, Montenegro is a leader. As a country that has made the most progress in the EU accession negotiations, we are building European future in which equality will be the foundation of our identity”, Popovic underscored at the Summit organized by the Parliament of Montenegro and the Global Network of Women Politicians (WPL).
She recalled that the Parliament raised the legal quotas for women representation to 40 percent, which, as she emphasized, is a clear message that “a woman’s place is where decisions are being made”.
WPL Board Chairwoman, Obiageli Ezekwesili, emphasized that the summit sends an important signal of trust and cooperation.
“When women lead, peace prevails and societies progress collectively. But representation alone is not enough – it must grow into influence, responsibility and real change”, said Ezekwesili.
The summit, which is being held for the first time in the Western Balkans, brings together over 220 women parliamentarians, ministers, presidents, vice presidents, mayors, founders and company directors from 65 countries.
