Podgorica, (MINA) – The voice of the youth must have a more prominent place in the media space and decision-making processes, so that policies and public content truly reflect their needs, attitudes and interests, it was said at the presentation of research on visibility, representation and participation of young people in the Montenegrin media.
The event held on the occasion of August 12, International Youth Day, was organized by the Youth Network of Montenegro (MMCG), with the support of the Council for Regional Cooperation (RCC).
Helena Brajovic from Defacto Consultancy, presenting research that included more than a 1,000 online articles, about 3,200 comments and 625 television reports, pointed out that young people appear more often as the object of reporting, than as participants speaking on their own behalf.
According to her, the analysis of online media showed that education, security and activism are the most represented topics when reporting on young people, while the economy and financial issues are significantly less represented.
Marko Salijevic from Defacto Consultancy, presenting the results of the television content analysis, said that seven television channels with national coverage were analyzed.
“In as many as 69.6 percent of the analyzed programs, no young people appeared either as a topic, as an actor, or as an interlocutor, while content related to young people makes up only 8.1 percent of the total analyzed program”, said Salijevic.
According to him, young people are insufficiently represented in television programs in Montenegro, and even when they do appear, they are more often the subject of discussions than equal interlocutors who express their own views.
