US-EU deal averts devastating consequences – Meloni

Premier Giorgia Meloni on Monday welcomed the trade agreement reached between the United States and the European Union which, among other things, features 15% tariffs on EU imports.

“I judge the fact that an agreement was reached positively,” Meloni told reporters in Addis Ababa, where she is taking part in the United Nations Food Systems Summit.

“I always thought, and continue to think, that a trade escalation between Europe and the United States would have had unpredictable and potentially devastating consequences,” she added, while stressing that she has not “sufficiently” seen the details of the deal yet.

“We will have to study the details of the agreement.

We will still have to work on the agreement because the one signed yesterday is in principle and a legally non-binding.

“There is still fighting to do “For example, we need to verify what the possible exemptions are, particularly on some agricultural products.

“There are a number of elements that are missing and I don’t know what we are referring to when we talk about investments, gas purchases etc.

“I won’t be able to assess this until I have the clear data.”
