The United Nations is under attack and needs to be defended, Italian President Sergio Mattarella said in an interview with ‘La Voce di New York’, an Italian English Digital Daily in the US.
“The 80th anniversary of the UN is a crucial moment for reflection,” Mattarella said.
“The UN has unquestionably helped shape the international order by developing shared values: peace, security, and international cooperation, affirming the prevalence of the principle of peaceful coexistence.
“These values evoke a vision of collaboration and dialogue, in which respect for the prerogatives of each state and respect for individuals form a coherent system based on the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
“That system remains more valid today than ever, precisely in the face of the disasters caused by its non-observance, and it must be defended precisely because it is under attack.
“The alternative would be a return to a world in constant turmoil, governed by temporary power relations, ultimately by the reality that led to the ruins following the outbreak of World War II, from which the San Francisco Charter sought to redeem the international community”.
