Two Cubs Born to Eurasian Lynx Family in Sofia Zoo

The Eurasian lynxes at the Sofia Zoo are enjoying new offspring, according to the zoo’s Facebook page.

The two little lynxes were born on June 11, the zoo told BTA. Their mother Quanta comes from Munich Zoo and their father Morgul – from Vienna’s Schönbrunn Zoo.

The young lynxes do not have names yet because their sex is not known. The cubs can now feed themselves and keepers work with them and hand them food, the zoo said. They are fed very small pieces of meat that are handed to them on a stick.

This is not the first generation of Quanta and Morgul. Their older daughter, Rita, lives with them. Quanta is a caring mother, the zoo said.

The little lynx cubs are not hidden from zoo visitors, but it’s up to them to show up. Usually it’s early in the morning or after 4 pm when it’s calmer and not so hot.

The breeding and population numbers of Eurasian lynxes in zoos are closely monitored by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, and the data is used for the conservation and restoration of this endangered species in Europe. In Bulgaria’s Red Book, the Eurasian lynx is in the category of “critically endangered species”, according to the Sofia Zoo.
