The European Commission has activated its strategic emergency reserve, rescEU on Foot and Mouth Diesease outbreak, following a request from the Cypriot authorities through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The assistance includes disinfectants, personal protective equipment, disposable protective coveralls, face masks, shoe covers, and other essential materials aimed at limiting the further spread of the virus.

According to a European Commission statement, since the FMD outbreak began in February, Cyprus has been working closely with the European Commission. More than one million vaccine doses have already been provided from the EU vaccine bank. In addition, three missions of the EU Veterinary Emergency Team have been carried out, offering specialised guidance and technical support on the ground. Meanwhile, Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, Olivér Várhelyi, recently visited Cyprus, expressing the EU’s full solidarity.

In his statement, Commissioner Várhelyi stressed that foot-and-mouth disease is one of the most contagious animal diseases and requires immediate and decisive action based on scientific knowledge and international protocols. He also highlighted that the EU has already provided substantial support, including scientific assistance, laboratory support, and vaccines, and will contribute to financial compensation for affected farmers.

For her part, Commissioner for Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, noted that Europe acts proactively and in solidarity, delivering immediate assistance to contain the outbreak and protect both public health and livelihoods.

According to the Commission, the EU Emergency Response Coordination Centre remains ready to provide additional assistance if requested.
