Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said he had discussed negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz with Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

“The memorandum from last June demonstrated that an agreement is possible, and Italy will continue to support every step toward fully restoring freedom of navigation and ending the conflict,” Tajani, who is also deputy premier, emphasized on X.

He noted that he and Araghchi “also addressed the crises in Lebanon and Yemen—specifically the need to guarantee the passage of merchant vessels through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which is crucial for our exports.

“I encouraged Iran to use its influence to promote political and diplomatic solutions that bring peace and stability to the region.

“I also underscored the importance of fulfilling international obligations regarding nuclear non-proliferation and respecting human rights and personal freedoms, starting with those of women,” Tajani added.
