The Ministry of Tourism has proceeded to the establishment of a new form of tourism infrastructure called “Sustainable Mountain Tourism Destination” for the strengthening of mountain tourism and the upgrading of mountainous areas in Greece. The relevant decision of the Minister of Tourism Olga Kefalogianni, was published in the Government Gazette and provides for the joint operation throughout the year of a ski resort, a refuge combined with hotel accommodation in a single area.

The “ Sustainable Mountain Tourism Destination” will be developed in accordance with the spatial/urban planning framework of the area, as well as any special protection regime for areas and forest areas. This initiative, following the support program for ski resorts through the recovery fund and the recently adopted law for their operation throughout the year, is part of a holistic strategy for the development of mountain tourism and the extension of the tourist season.
