Studies for the full restoration and protection of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus underway

The preparation of studies for the protection and promotion of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, on the southern slope of the Acropolis, was the subject of a research programme assigned to the National Technical University of Athens, in July 2025, by the Directorate of Restoration of Ancient Monuments of the Ministry of Culture. The aim of the ministry is a complete restoration of the monumental ensemble of the Herodes Atticus Odeon, as well as the upgrading of the operating infrastructure, so that these are harmoniously integrated with the natural landscape and the surrounding environment, according to a statement by the culture ministry.

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni stated: “The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a major cultural asset for the city of Athens, of great historical importance and with significance extending beyond the local level. These characteristics also govern the framework of studies regarding any modern intervention. The proposed interventions are in line with the internationally recognised principles of monument protection, but also the modern operation of a monument of spectacle. As we have already announced, the conservation, restoration and upgrading works of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus will last at least three years. During that period, the monument will remain closed.

“Our goal is, upon completion of the works, to guarantee that the monument is adequately protected against natural and man-made damage…upgraded to support the functional requirements of modern cultural events, such as the Athens Festival.”
