Secretary of State with the Energy Ministry Cristian Busoi has signed a joint letter to EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen to prepare the application for including the Green Corridor project on the list of Projects of Mutual Interest (PMI).

In a Facebook post, Busoi recalls that the project linking Azerbaijan and Georgia, crossing the Black Sea, then Romania and Hungary, was launched in December 2022 in Bucharest, in the presence of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and aims to bring renewable electricity from Azerbaijan into Europe.

“I signed a joint letter to Commissioner Dan Jorgensen to prepare the application for including the project on the PMI list, an essential requirement for obtaining European co-financing, increasing investor attractiveness and accessing institutional funding,” Busoi wrote.

Secretary of State Cristian Busoi attended on July 8 the ministerial meeting in Baku dedicated to the Green Corridor, accompanied by Ambassador Vasile Soare, Transelectrica Head of Corporate Finance Florin Stanciu, and colleagues from the Ministry and Embassy. Participants included Hungary’s Secretary of State Andras Totth, Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov, and Georgia’s Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili.

Busoi noted that he approved the feasibility-study results and the 2027 – 2028 budget of the Green Energy Corridor Power Company (GECO) headquartered in Bucharest and jointly owned by Transelectrica, MVM, AzerEnerji and Georgian State Electrosystem.

The Energy Ministry official argued that for Romania and Transelectrica, participation in this project will support the ambition to become a regional energy hub and a pillar of energy security, while strengthening the EU’s presence in the region and its partnership with Azerbaijan and Georgia.

“A key condition for the project’s success will be increasing interconnection capacity between Central and Eastern Europe and Western and Northern Europe – an objective Romania consistently advocates at EU level and for which I have presented arguments in several Energy Council meetings,” he added.

The Strategic Partnership Agreement between the governments of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Hungary and Romania on green energy development and transmission was signed in December 2022.
