Spuz prison detainees announce hunger strike

Podgorica, (MINA) – Detainees at the Investigation Prison of the Administration for the Execution of Criminal Sanctions (UIKS) in Spuz have onca again announced a hunger strike due to overcrowding in the prison.

In a letter submitted through their lawyer Nikola Tomkovic, the detainees stated that the agreements reached following the previously announced general strike a few months ago, reached together with President of the High Court in Podgorica Zoran Radovic and the the representatives of the Ministry of Justice, have not been implemented.

They emphasized that the situation have even deteriorated further since then.

The detainees stated that they see the courts as the main culprits for the current situation, which frequently use detention orders and do not allow the detainees to defend themselves while at liberty, as well as the Ministry of Justice, which they hold responsible for management of the prison in Spuz.

They called on to the Bar Association to support their demands, and proposed a joint general strike of detainees and lawyers in mid-September.

The detainees pointed out that there is clearly a violation of human rights and a violation of the Constitution of Montenegro, as well as a violation of rights according to the European Court of Human Rights.
