Sokol: Increasing Serbian-Russian influence on political processes in Montenegro

Podgorica, (MINA) – The EU must not allow Montenegro to turn into “Belarus of the Mediterranean” due to increasing influence from Serbia and Russia, said Croatian MEP Tomislav Sokol.

Speaking at the meeting of the EU-Montenegro Stabilization and Association Parliamentary Committee (SAPC) held in the Montenegrin Parliament, he said that some progress has been made in Montenegro, but that there are still many problems, one of which, according to him, is ever-increasing Serbian-Russian influence on political processes.

“Speaking about the ties with Croatia, we have seen a series of provocations, such was passing of the infamous Jasenovac resolution, which sole aim was to provoke a reaction from the other side and lead to the slowing down of Montenegro’s EU path, and blame some imaginary enemies from other countries”, Sokol said, Pobjeda web portal reports.

He said that the war crimes prosecuting is also problematic, stressing that it represents “one of the huge problems”.

Sokol also referred to the announced amendments to the Citizenship Law, warning that this would lead to a complete change in the political structure of Montenegro and to having the Montenegrin government “elected in Belgrade and Moscow”.
