Sardinia on Wednesday became the second Italian region, after Tuscany, to approve a law regulating end of life issues.
The regional council approved a bill submitted by the right to die association Luca Coscioni, which has been campaigning for years for Italy to approve assisted suicide and has recently started helping terminally ill people to end their lives in Italy after previously taking them to the Dignitas Clinic in Zurich.
The new Sardinian law, like Tuscany’s, aims to apply procedures regarding the timing of healthcare assistance for physician-assisted suicide, as a result of a 2019 ruling by the Constitutional Court which urged lawmakers to fill the legal void on end of life issues including voluntary euthanasia in Italy.
