The 14th-century Saschiz Refuge Fortress, also known as the Peasants’ Fortress, built by the Saxons of seven Transylvanian villages as a refuge against invading armies, has opened to visitors daily from July 1 between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Starting today, the fortress will be open to visitors every day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We invite you to discover a place where history, heritage and landscape come together in a remarkable setting. Whether you are visiting Saschiz for the first time or returning, the fortress awaits you with fascinating stories, spectacular views and an authentic experience. And this is only the beginning. Over the coming weeks, we will be organising events, experiences and special activities that will bring even more life to the fortress. Stay tuned for a summer full of surprises,” the local authorities posted on the fortress’s official page.

Construction of the fortress began in 1347 and involved seven Saxon communities. Built in the shape of a ship and covering an area of 5,000 square metres, it is one of the most important tourist attractions in Mures County and can be seen from the Brasov-Sighisoara section of the E60 national road.

The fortress has also inspired numerous local legends, including one claiming that a secret underground passage links it to the Evangelical church in the centre of the village, and another that every merchant passing through Saschiz was required to transport a cartload of stone up the hill for its construction.

The Saschiz Refuge Fortress was restored from a state of ruin through a project worth more than RON 8.4 million (about EUR 1.7 million), financed under the 2014-2020 Regional Operational Programme and implemented by the local municipality.
