Research highlights disparities in living donor kidney transplants across Europe

A new publication led by Clinical Assistant Professor Andreas Koussios of the European University Cyprus (EUC) School of Medicine highlights significant disparities in access to living donor kidney transplants across Europe and identifies priorities for improving equity in transplants.
A press release issued by the University said that the European study, published in the journal Transplant International, brings together experts from across Europe to examine differences in living donor transplants, including disparities related to geographic location, socioeconomic status and ethnicity, as well as differences in donor assessment, informed consent, long-term follow-up and access to kidney exchange programmes.
As it is noted, more than 500,000 people across Europe need dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive, but access to living donor transplantation varies significantly depending on where patients live.
The research highlights the need to ensure that more patients have a fair chance to benefit from this life-saving treatment.
