ZAGREB, 20 Nov (Hina) – The government on Thursday expanded the list of capped retail prices to 100 products and categories. Economy Minister Ante Šušnjar said the aim is to assist the most vulnerable citizens.
The new decision adds 30 products and categories to the existing list. Retailers must provide at least one item per category at the capped price and set a maximum retail price for at least one item in each category.
For products already on the list, the maximum prices will remain unchanged, taking current market conditions into account, Šušnjar said.
Retailers are required to clearly display a visual identification mark alongside the capped price and place a poster at the entrance or another visible location listing the categories and their maximum prices to keep consumers properly informed.
“This measure continues our responsible economic and social approach to protecting citizens’ living standards, particularly at a time when rising costs pose a challenge for many households,” Šušnjar said, adding that the aim is to ease inflationary pressures and protect the most vulnerable groups.
Stores larger than 400 square metres must maintain separate areas for capped-price items.
Šušnjar said the government will monitor market prices and enforce compliance with the decision, reacting promptly if needed. He urged retailers to treat the caps as maximum prices and, where market conditions allow, offer lower daily prices.
Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said the move targets those with the lowest incomes and is aimed at countering inflationary pressures.
