Milan police coordinated by the local State Attorney’s Office’s anti-terror division have arrested a 38-year-old Turkish citizen living in Italy who is suspected of involvement in a criminal group that allegedly committed terrorist attacks in Europe, investigative sources said on Thursday.
The man is under investigation on charges of criminal association, aggravated by its cross-national orgaanization, aimed at the illegal detention and international trafficking of weapons, aiding and abetting illegal immigration and multiple murders, among others.
The man is suspected of being linked to a group that allegedly carried out attacks in Europe, in particular in Berlin, murdering a Turkish citizen on March 10 and of planning a foiled attack in Turkey targeting an aluminium factory last March 19-20, investigative sources said.
The criminal network was allegedly headed by a Turkish national arrested on May 22 last year with 20 others as part of an international operation involving Italian, Swiss, Bosnian and Dutch police.
Investigators believe the organization’s alleged leader masterminded the murder of the Turkish national in Berlin and the foiled attack in Turkey, among others.
