A total of 1,397 babies were born in 2025 following procedures financed by Bulgaria’s Centre for Assisted Reproduction (CAR), the press service of the Health Ministry told BTA.

During the first half of 2026, CAR issued 2,598 funding approvals for assisted reproduction procedures, according to data from the Centre’s reports for the first two quarters of the year, published on its website.

The Health Ministry’s 2025 budget allocated BGN 22 million (EUR 11.25 million) to provide organisational and financial support for Bulgarian citizens undergoing infertility treatment, primarily through assisted reproductive technologies, the ministry said.

They noted that there have been no delays in payments to healthcare facilities working with CAR in 2025. A total of BGN 21,767,195 has been paid to partner medical institutions.

The draft 2026 State Budget Act provides EUR 11.25 million in the Health Ministry’s budget for organisational and financial support for Bulgarian citizens undergoing infertility treatment, primarily through assisted reproductive technologies.

According to data published on CAR’s website, the Centre received 1,291 applications in the first quarter of 2026, while 1,222 funding approvals were issued. Budget expenditure for assisted reproduction procedures during the quarter amounted to EUR 1,902,633.09.

In the second quarter of 2026, CAR received 1,394 applications and issued 1,376 funding approvals, with total expenditure reaching EUR 2,950,688.

CAR finances up to BGN 6,000 per procedure for a maximum of four assisted reproduction treatment cycles.

Women under the age of 43 who are either Bulgarian citizens or permanent residents of Bulgaria and who meet the eligibility criteria for financial assistance for assisted reproduction may apply for funding.

Before submitting an application to CAR, applicants must choose a fertility clinic that has a contract with the Centre. A list of approved healthcare providers is available on the Centre’s website.
