Greece’s central role on the international energy map was underlined by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in his weekly post on Sunday.

“Our consistent position against the Russian invasion of Ukraine and against Europe’s energy dependence on Russia is being rewarded,” the Prime Minister stated adding that through the Vertical Corridor, which will transport natural gas from Alexandroupolis to Ukraine, Greece ensures energy and geopolitical security for many years.

Referring to the exploratory drilling that will begin northwest of Corfu within the framework of the Exxonmobil, Helleniq Energy and Energean Hellas agreement, Mitsotakis stressed that “as long as the forecasts for significant deposits are confirmed, Greece can cover its natural gas needs for many years,” noting that this specific agreement would not have been possible if the agreement on the delimitation of the EEZ with Italy had not been signed.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister underlined that the aforementioned developments, which “strengthen the energy security and sovereignty of the country… translate into thousands of new, well-paid jobs for our fellow citizens, better wages, development for local communities, better energy prices for households and businesses.”
