Kosovo–EFTA free trade agreement enters into force today

As of today, October 1, 2026, the Free Trade Agreement between Kosovo and the EFTA countries — Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein — has entered into full implementation, KosovaPress reports.

Marking the entry into force of the agreement, which is important for Kosovo’s economy, the first package will also be dispatched today to the EFTA market from the Dheu i Bardhe border crossing at 1:00 p.m.

As part of the implementation of the agreement, procedures have also been established for proof of origin and customs declarations for goods eligible for preferential treatment.

The relationship between the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), established in 1960, and Kosovo is based on a comprehensive free trade agreement.

Negotiations on the free trade agreement between Kosovo and the four EFTA member states began in June 2022.

The negotiations were successfully concluded in September 2024, while the agreement was officially signed on January 22, 2025. It aims to liberalize economic exchanges and establish long-term, stable trade rules.

Key areas include the removal of tariff barriers and the facilitation of trade in industrial and processed agricultural products, simplification of technical, sanitary and phytosanitary rules to reduce obstacles at the border, environmental protection, and provisions in line with World Trade Organization standards.

EFTA has one of the world’s broadest networks of free trade agreements, covering more than 40 countries outside its borders, including its agreement with Kosovo.
