Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister Thanassis Kontogiorgis emphasised that with the aim of addressing the demographic decline in remote areas, the new Demographic Development Program is being launched.
As he said, the program begins in the Regional Unit of Evros, which provides financial support to households that will move their primary residence to the municipalities of Soufli, Didymoteicho, and Orestiada. Applications are submitted through the special platform https://relocation.vouchers.gov.gr/ with the goal of making the villages of Evros once again a place of settlement for new families and individuals who wish to build their lives there.
The measure has a total budget of 10 million euros, is being developed by the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family, and concerns up to 1,000 citizens who will settle in Evros. Specifically, it provides for financial support of up to 10,000 euros for beneficiaries, with an additional 1,000 euros for each child. After the pilot implementation of the program, its extension to other remote and mountainous areas will be considered based on an assessment of demographic and geographical conditions.
As Kontogeorgis pointed out, “we are prioritising housing, employment, health, and education, which are the basic minimum requirements for the revitalisation of several regions.”
