Italy’s commitment in the Middle East will be important – FM

Italy’s commitment in the Middle East will be important, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on the sidelines of the G7 ministers’ meeting in Canada Tuesday night.

“Italy’s commitment in the Middle East will be important,” said Tajani, who is also deputy premier.

“We’ll see what kind of commitment it will be: it could involve training the Palestinian police, or it could involve making a significant contribution to civil administration.

“Italy will certainly be constructive, also because we will be organizing the Cairo conference,” he added.

“We e have already decided to invest 60 million euros in reconstruction, the first five sent months ago,” Tajani said.

“We will consult with all stakeholders, including the Muslim ones.” “We must ensure that the truce in Gaza is consolidated and that all the aid and food supplies reach the population,” Tajani said on the sidelines of the G7 ministerial meeting in Niagara-on-the-Lake. “Our envoy has been to Jordan, Ramallah, Israel, and Egypt, and will soon travel to the United States to ensure that Italy plays a leading role in the reconstruction phase and in the phase that must be that of peace,” he added.

In other points, Tajani said China cannot dictate prices on raw materials such as rare earths, on which is has a near monopoly; that Russia is not winning the Ukraine war but spreading propaganda; and that the international community must help achieve a ceasefire in Sudan amid accusations of genocide there.

“We cannot let China dictate the price of raw materials; our competitiveness depends on it,” Tajani said.

“We must strengthen the dialogue between us and find new opportunities for raw materials, such as Africa, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand,” the minister added.

“The Russian offensive isn’t one of great victories,” Tajani went on.

“There’s also a lot of propaganda. They’ve been saying for three years that they’re winning the war, and they still haven’t managed to win it.

“We must continue working for a ceasefire and force Putin to come to his senses,” the foreign minister emphasized.

On the Sudan crisis, Tajani said “We hope to reach a ceasefire between the two sides.

“Italy is organizing significant aid: a plane and a ship with supplies for children will arrive in Port Sudan before Christmas,” the foreign minister added, emphasizing that “we also need to speak with interlocutors who are not present here, such as the Gulf countries.”
