Premier Giorgia Meloni has blamed the breakdown of international law for the outbreak of the war in Iran and said she does not have the information needed to condemn or support the attacks by the United States and Israel that started it.

“I think we have to deal with a situation in which the rules of international law have objectively broken down,” Meloni told Mediaset television on Sunday.

“I don’t think they broke down with this episode because there are many precedents, but the situation is certainly one of great chaos.

“The crisis (of international law) has become structural in my opinion, especially with the invasion of Ukraine, because who is supposed to enforce international law? “In theory, it’s the United Nations, but we have the anomaly of a member of the UN Security Council which four years ago invaded its neighbour in an attempt to annex it”.

When asked if she supported the attacks by the US and Israel, she replied: “I objectively don’t have the necessary elements, as almost no one in Europe does.

“Indeed, no one has taken a position that is categorical from this point of view,” she continued.

“No one except for Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez has condemned the initiative, just like no one is participating in the conflict”.

On Sunday US President Donald Trump told il Corriere della Sera that Meloni was a “great leader” and “always tries to help”.

“She is an excellent leader and she is my friend,” he said.
