Government sees opportunity for closer ties with US after its Ambassador’s new appointment in Ukraine
Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said Friday that the temporary exercise of additional new duties of the US Ambassador to Cyprus, Julie Davis, as US Charge d’Affaires to Ukraine, enables the Republic of Cyprus to have a more close deepening of its relations with the US, as the Ambassador will have a direct channel of communication with the US leadership.
The Spokesman, who was invited by journalists to comment on the significance of this appointment for Cyprus, pointed out that the Republic of Cyprus was timely informed about it by the US ‘with institutional respect’ adding that Nicosia gave its “consent to this temporary appointment of the US Ambassador as Charge d’Affaires to Ukraine”. He added that all procedural arrangements have been made so that she can also exercise her duties in the Republic of Cyprus as well, since she remains accredited as Ambassador.
Letymbiotis noted that the fact that “an Ambassador with the skills, experience and trust shown in her by the American administration is appointed as Ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus also demonstrates the importance that the US attaches to Cyprus itself”. Moreover, he noted the “much more intensive and close relations with the US Ambassador” adding that during her office “they have been upgraded to a great extent”.
Stressing that the Cyprus-US relations are at their highest level since the founding of the Republic of Cyprus, he said that this is due both to the credibility of Nicosia’s foreign policy and the relationship it has with Ambassador Davis.
The Government Spokesman noted that in the coming period, this temporary exercise of her duties will also enable the Republic of Cyprus to further deepen its relations with the US “since it is now clear that the Ambassador will also have a direct channel of communication with the American leadership, which has entrusted her with this crucial role.”
