Lombardy has seen the first case of assisted suicide entirely managed by the regional health service.
Domenico Zuccarella, 59, suffered from secondary progressive multiple sclerosis and died on August 25 after receiving assistance from the Lombardy Regional Health Service.
As the right-to-die Luca Coscioni Association explains, this is the third person in Lombardy to access voluntary death, and the first case in which the Regional Health Service organized the entire implementation phase, including healthcare, medication, the necessary equipment, and the identification of the location.
Several people have been helped to commit assisted suicide in Italy by the Coscioni association, which previously took the terminally ill to the Dignitas Clinic near Zurich to end their lives before a landmark 2019 ruling by the Italian supreme court that stated assisted suicide is legal in some cases.
The ruling laid down strict markers on cases in which assisted suicide is legitimate and called on parliament to end a legislative vacuum on end-of-life issues.
So far it has failed to do so.
