TIRANA, Oct 25 /ATA/ The Girls’ School in Korçë opened its doors on 23 October 1891.
Commemorating this landmark in the history of Albanian-language education, the National Library of Albania, in partnership with the Institute for Albanian and Protestant Studies and Korçë Municipality, organised an exhibition entitled “135 Years of the Girls’ School”, honouring the historic institution and the contributions of Gjerasim Qiriazi and Sevasti Qiriazi.
The exhibition sheds light on a landmark in the history of Albanian-language education, recalling the efforts to promote education for Albanian girls.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to visit the original Girls’ School building in Korçë tomorrow and explore an important chapter of the country’s educational and cultural heritage.
On the occasion of the anniversary, Albanian Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi described the Girls’ School as one of the most remarkable chapters in Korçë’s history.
“Today, with the return of the French Lyceum, this spirit is finding a new expression, opening doors for young people to knowledge, culture and future opportunities. The European Albania we aspire to build takes shape every day through investment in education and younger generations,” Peleshi said.
The building served not only as a school but also as one of the earliest centres of evangelical activity in Korçë. It is associated with significant episodes in the city’s history and the Albanian National Awakening.
