European center for obesity prevention established at Harokopio University

European center for the fight against obesity was established within the framework of the national action plan to combat childhood obesity, implemented by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with UNICEF. The center operates at Harokopio University of Athens.

After its presentation, a working meeting was held at the Ministry of Health, attended by Minister Adonis Georgiadis, Deputy Minister Irini Agapidaki, Director of the UNICEF Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia Regina De Dominicis, and UNICEF’s diplomatic representative in Greece, Ghassan Khalil.

“In Greece, childhood obesity is a major problem, with our country ranking among the highest in the European Union.” The need for urgent action is imperative, with the central goal of creating an environment that promotes healthy choices, exercise, and long-term well-being for children,” said Georgiadis, adding that the European Center for the Fight Against Obesity was established to address this serious and growing threat.

The center’s work focuses on three main pillars:

  1. The processing and dissemination of evidence-based knowledge on obesity
  2.  The exchange of good practices and proven solutions at the European and international level
  3.  The support of children with excess weight or obesity through innovative, digital tools and free monitoring by dietitians.
