Dubrovnik introduces limited traffic zone in old town to reduce traffic jams

ZAGREB, 28 Aug (Hina) – As of 1 September, the City of Dubrovnik will enact a limited traffic zone in the city centre in a bid to lessen traffic jams in the old city and consequently reduce gas emissions that adversely affect monuments and listed buildings in the area.

Mayor Mato Franković on Wednesday announced the introduction of the special traffic regime in the centre of this Adriatic resort.

The decision on the limited traffic zone was made by the city council in May, in compliance with guidelines given by UNESCO and the relevant plan for managing the old city.

The mayor told the press that Dubrovnik was the first Croatian city to adopt such a plan.

He said that training courses and workshops would be held for hotels and owners of properties in the city about the new rules for driving through the city.

The city will advertise a tender for taxi service in the centre, and 100 licences will be awarded while there are over 9,000 taxi drivers in the area, according to the mayor.

Franković said that the new traffic system would be tested until 1 November, after which it would be upgraded.

The authorities will start issuing fines for violations of the new rules in March 2025.
