Cypriot defence industry can produce equipment for National Guard, Defence Minister tells CNA

The Cypriot defence industry is now capable of producing equipment for the National Guard, Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas told CNA, here on Friday, describing Cyprus’ presence at the Eurosatory 2026 defence exhibition in Paris earlier this week as “particularly strong”.

“Our presence at Eurosatory, which is being held in Paris and concludes tomorrow, has been particularly noticeable,” Palmas said in response to a CNA question.

He noted that Cyprus’ participation, along with the presence of the domestic defence industry at the exhibition, has grown steadily over the years.

“This demonstrates the importance we attach to the development of the defence industry in our country,” he said.

Palmas stressed that the Cypriot defence industry “now has the capability to produce equipment that can strengthen the National Guard”.

“At the same time, this sector can develop into an industry capable of contributing to the country’s gross domestic product,” he added.

“The benefits are twofold: strengthening the defence industry while also supporting economic growth.”

The Minister of Defence also said the government is pursuing a policy aimed at fostering partnerships between Cypriot companies and foreign firms involved in defence programmes.

“Our objective is to create the conditions for cooperation between Cypriot companies and the companies we work with abroad on defence programmes, providing the impetus needed to support the growth of these businesses,” he said.

Palmas expressed confidence that the goal could be achieved, stressing the need for patience, seriousness, responsibility and, above all, credibility.

“These are essential if we are to successfully develop and promote this industry,” he said.

Referring to the bilateral military agreement with France, Palmas said it stemmed from the excellent political relations between the two countries.

“The agreement covers matters concerning the armed forces of France and those of the Republic of Cyprus,” he noted.

He explained that it provides a framework for bilateral cooperation, including enhanced exchanges of information, training activities, military exercises and various arrangements facilitating the work of personnel from both countries.

Asked about the National Guard’s defence procurement priorities, Palmas declined to provide details.

“The priorities are clear, but it would not be prudent for me to elaborate on them at this stage,” he said.

“I believe these matters should remain confidential in order to avoid unnecessary speculation,” he added.

Commenting on Cyprus’ defence cooperation with other countries, the Minister said the close relationship and cooperation developed with the United States were well known.

“It is also well known that we cooperate with Israel on defence programmes, while maintaining similar cooperation with Greece, Serbia and other countries,” Palmas said.
